The year is rapidly coming to a close and the AEP is looking forward to 2011 and some of the wonderful things in store. Over the past few months, the AEP has held a number of great events that have brought together Emerging Professionals from across the state. In July, Woodbury University hosted about 60 Emerging Professionals at the AEP Statewide Forum. The day was a wonderful mix of AIA information and general education. A big thank you goes out to our speakers. Alison Morita, Assoc. AIA, AIA San Diego Emerging Professionals Commissioner, gave a great presentation on the outstanding programs at AIA San Diego that contributed to her 2010 National AIA Associates Award. Alison has written an article included in this issue that summarizes some of her programs and lessons learned. Tyler Ashworth, 2010 AIAS National President, and the New School San Diego AIAS Leadership, including Lauren Pasion, Craig Howard, and Allen Ghaida, reviewed the 2009 AIAS West Quad Summit on “Leadership Through Civic Engagement”. They also announced that New School will be hosting this great event again next year, so look for an opportunity to attend! The day concluded with a presentation from Hadley Arnold of Woodbury University’s Arid Lands Institute on “Water in the West” and the amazing activities that will be taking place over the next couple of years around this topic. They will be co-sponsoring the William Turnbull Competition with the California Architectural Foundation, so please keep an eye out for this great opportunity. Everyone also had a chance to socialize and get to know other EPs from across the state. Make sure to come out next year to make the most of your AIA membership! The AEP also co-sponsored a camping trip with BAYA on August 20-22 at Arroyo Seco Recreation Area with 20 members in attendance, including the 2011 AIACC President Anne Laird-Blanton. It was truly a bonding experience as Justin Pauly, AIA Monterey Bay Associate Director, took us on one of the more crazy “hikes” of my life involving some pretty lengthy swims. It was well worth it though and we all had war stories to tell around the campfire. Jason Dale Pierce, Assoc. AIA recaps our experience with his article in this issue. Make sure to look out for this event at the end of the summer next year. Also remember that nominations are open for next year’s AEP officers. Open positions include YAF Director North and South, Associate Director South, and Student Director South. Please contact a current officer to find out more about the position. A short description of responsibilities can be found in the AEP Handbook at www.aiaccaep.org. Official nominations were due September 2, but you can always be nominated from the floor. There is also an appointed position open for IDP State Coordinator South. Please email procedural questions to Brenda Balstad (
